I understand that I can purchase Office/Outlook 2016 for the iMac and that I can import my historic emails from windows. However, thus far my show stopper is it appears that I would no longer be able to sync contacts and calendars between Outlook 2016 for iMac and El Capitain or my several iDevices.

I am facing the following challenge: when composing email and typing directly into the To field, Outlook 2013 does not reliably look up contacts in multiple address books (I am not talking about the Auto Complete function but check against address books for contact never before emailed). Sometimes I get the red squigly line but it suggests only some contacts with the same last name. If I use Ctrl K, I also can't get all contacts to appear in the suggestion box.
